Tomatoes. A staple of so many home gardens, especially in gardens tended by Italians.

For as long as I can remember, my dad has grown tomatoes. Fresh off the vine, they are like candy.

I am always amazed at how my dad's garden grows.

This year, I have taken a more active role in helping him with his garden and I now see all of the hard work he has done for so, so many years.

I am grateful.
Here is Dad and the first tomatoes.

A few years ago, I received the
Seed Savers Catalog. Besides being visually beautiful, the fact that people are taking heirloom varieties of plants and making sure they continue to exist for years to come is just amazing.
I ordered seeds for Purple Russians. They are delicious and peppery. Love them!

Here are some other tomatoes that we have harvested.

I made delicious Panzanella Salad. Crusty Italian Bread - cucumbers - red onions - basil - and of course, the star of the summer, tomatoes.

I also made a Greek Salad with everything from above except for the bread. I also added capers and feta cheese.

To think that in a few short months, tasteless, colorless, sweetless tomatoes will be crowding the grocery store shelves.
Ugh.
If I could only make these tomatoes last all year long!

Carmie, those tomatoes look amazing! I definitely want to start growing my own tomatoes next year! They are just SO much better!
Those salads look DELICIOUS...I'm coming right over! ;)
you are making me hungry
I'd love to be able to grow tomatoes in my yard, but we have some snobby rules from our neighborhood association that outlaws them.
Those are some good looking tomatoes!
We started to grow some vegetables this year and tomatoes are what really took off! We really harvested quite a few tomatoes and I love it! We made a lot of salads, which I love!
I participated in Miscellany Monday too if you want to come visit us. :)

J'adore cucumber... that salad looks divine!!! I'm not a to-mah-to fan but I must tell you my neighbor marinated tomatoes with balsamic vingar and feta cheese for two day and then served them and they were DIVINE too!
Reading anything good this summer?
These look delicious, Carmie! As does your salad; except for the bread {cause I'm gluten free} I could eat that right now!

I just got zapped trying to lick the computer screen. I wish I could download the panzanella salad right into my mouth.
Oh my word! I can just taste those tomatoes. Nothing better than a fresh tomato sandwich ~ great bread, mayo, salt & pepper added. The salads are divine!
